Piedmont Outdoor Painting Society

Alexis Lavine

I am primarily a watercolor painter, and my paintings always begin as drawings.  My paintings appear to be realistic, but they are carefully conceived and designed around abstract shapes, values, colors, movement, and positive and negative spaces.  I believe that my approach gives my work a more contemporary feel ... and results in paintings which convey my personal reaction to my subject, not merely  the visual facts.

I am a passionate “plein air” painter, and take tremendous pleasure from painting outdoors, on location, wherever I am inspired by the landscape.  While outdoor painting may not be as comfortable as painting in the studio, I believe that the total sensory experience of working on location, leads to more expressive, exciting paintings.

Education is so important!  I earned two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree, before embarking on my path as a painter.  I continue to study art whenever possible, and I also teach painting and drawing classes and workshops.   I love to communicate about art, share my experience and knowledge, and help my students achieve greater success.

Aside from POPS, I am a signature member of several professional associations, most notably the National Association of Women Artists.  My work can be found in galleries in the mid-Atlantic and Southern states, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  You can see many of my paintings and learn more about my art and my teaching by visiting my web site at: www.alexislavineartist.com

Recently I started writing a weekly blog called “Painting of the Week,” which is almost like a weekly mini painting lesson.  You can visit my blog and also subscribe to it at www.alexislavineartist.blogspot.com
