“For me, plein air painting is about recording my emotional reaction to a specific place at a specific time of day. The studio painting that may come from that experience is an extension of the intense feelings and reactions I had when painting outside.”

“ Being outdoors as a part of the landscape while painting feeds my soul and gives my work a quality that can’t be obtained any other way.”

Julie Hayes
"God has created so much beauty in our environment- - we need only to take the time to find it – or let it find us. Painting for me is an emotional response to my surroundings. Whether painting in the studio or outdoors, I prefer painting from life. Plein air painting is my passion, not only because it gives me an excuse to be in the beautiful outdoors, but for the pure joy of experiencing all the senses through sights, sounds and smells. It is about light, color and life and how it appears to me in that brief moment I am there, requiring intense focus and quick reaction to the ever-changing environment. A successful plein air painting will take me back to that magical moment in time even months or years later and hopefully some of that will be added to the experience of those who view my paintings.”

“Making art is an essential and defining part of who I am and how I live. I see so much that intrigues me, and I am endlessly challenged to express what I see and how I feel in my own way, on paper or canvas.”

Judy McGinn
“Painting is a form of expressing what I find beautiful and poignant in life. This can be in the form of figures, especially in candid poses, and in nature. When I am driving my car and feeling a little dreary, I look up and see the trees and feel wonderful. It is this feeling that I try to convey in my paintings.”
Judy Meyler
“Painting is one of my greatest joys in life. Nothing can be more exciting than to be filled with inspiration and then act on it. It has been said that the eyes are the windows of the soul. My eyes help me to express a part of my soul through my work. Whether it’s a brilliant sunny day, an interesting still life, or figures on the beach. I am moved by the light which dances across each object joining them as with a common thread; each reacting in its own special way. I love to find a challenge and let the brush start to dictate where we will go with it. Seeing colors and problem solving relationships between warm and cool, intensity and contrast are all part of the puzzle beckoning to be solved. There is no greater privilege than to be able to act on an inspiration.“

Cheryl Powell
“My work is representational but I am not drawn to subject matter based on what it is – I am drawn to it based on how it is. The defining abstract shapes are what interest me. I try to find what is special about a subject and strengthen it – point it out through the use of color, values, composition and simplification.“

Marsha Thrift
"I am a pastel artist who uses soft pastels to paint rich color and texture, creating my impression of the world around me in hopes that others might experience the joy and excitement as I see it. Occasionally I work in oil, watercolor or mixed media, but I am always infatuated with the color and texture that I see around me. I strive for each work of art to truly express something insightful within me, not to simply be a copy of what I am seeing. I especially love painting people and plein air landscapes, and I describe my work as “painterly realism.”
